In addition to the usual reviews and comments you would find on a horror movie blog, this is also a document of the wonderfully vast horror movie section of the video store I worked at in my youth.

RM#196

Hey all. I just wanted to plug the new Halloween double issue of Rue Morgue.

If you get one issue this year, let it be this one as it is ace. And I say that not only because I contributed to the 50 Underseen Horror Films of the Last 20 Years, but there's some other fantastic content in there. In addition to the cover story about unsung icon of Italian horror Dardano Sarchetti, there's a great piece on indie game developer Puppet Combo and an article on the representation of the deaf community in horror films.

You can grab it here.

Say My Name, Say My Name...

Hey all, just wanted to post that Rue Morgue #194 is out now.

As you can see, it's all about Candyman. With things being what they are right now, distribution lines for RM are a tad thin so why consider grabbing some back issues from the online store. Just think what a pick-me-up it would be to have this mag show up in your mailbox, instead of just the usual burger joint coupons and real estate listings.

Anyway, stay safe kids.

Nineties Delirium!

Hey all. Just a quick post to let you know that Delirium #21 comes out today.

This issue is a love letter to 90's horror and was guest-edited by filmmaker Ama Lea. Lea is no stranger to the magazine, having served as art director and contributor on many of Delirium's past issues. But if that isn't enough for you, look out for my piece about the early days of Full Moon Video. Find out how you can get the new issue, by going here.

Ed - Funny story. So it looks like my article got bumped for ad space. I know, right? Look for it in issue #22 I guess?

DKTM 352

Hello all. I hope you are enjoying your Labour Day weekend. I am basically just killing time before the two-hour finale of Twin Peaks tonight, but in the meantime here are some damn good bits of genre to chew on.

Better Watch Out!

I wanted to call attention to an awesome publication that is currently taking pre-orders on IndieGogo, Spectacular Optical's Yuletide Terror. I'll let the pitch video take the floor.

Edited by Kier-La Janisse & Paul Corupe, they have been putting out quality books on film for years, including 2014's Kid Power and 2015's Satanic Panic. I am super stoked for this one, as it will have articles on some of my favourite Xmas titles, including Black Christmas & 3615: Code Pere Noël aka Game Over.

I immediately pledged when I found out that there was a perk available commemorating Ed Hunt's 1988's Christmas classic The Brain.

For more info on the campaign, click here.

Rue Morgue Turns 20.

Congratulations to Rue Morgue magazine to hitting twenty years, as their new Halloween issue hit stands recently.

It's a pretty ballin' issue with extensive articles on the history of witches on film and media as well as the terrific piece (which I also contributed to) 25 Non-Fiction Genre Film Books That Everyone Should Own. To commemorate the 20th anniversary, music editor Aaron Von Lupton compiled this sweet horror-synth playlist entitled They Came From Rue Morgue.

Here's to twenty more, Rue Morgue!

Bustin' Cape Town Style!

Check out this awesome proof-of-concept video for Michael Matthew's adaptation of the Charlie Human novel.

The comparisons to Ghostbusters and District 9 are obviously apt, but I actually got a big John Dies At The End vibe, as well. Hopefully, something larger comes from this.

Barker Bits.

In addendum to my piece on HexFest's Rawhead Rex last weekend, there was also some coverage done by the Clive Barker Podcast via correspondent Jonathan Kui. Check it out below if you wanna hear interviews with yours truly, HXFF director Aaron Allen and the full talk with Greg Lamberson that followed the movie.

Deliria!

It was at Shock Stock last weekend that Fangoria editor Chris Alexander let me know some wonderful news - the article I turned into him a few months ago had been published in the latest issue of Delirium!

For those who don't know, Delirium magazine is a labour of love started by Alexander to explore the vast empire of genre icon Charles Band. Some time ago, while engaged in a discussion about Full Moon collectibles on Facebook, I linked to one of my Archives posts. I guess it caught his attention, as Alexander then asked if I would write a piece about my collection. Since I had no shortage of stuff to offer, I was happy to oblige. I just had no idea he'd turned it around so fast!

It's pretty awesome seeing your name in a horror mag. I mean, I've had letters printed over the years, but being an honest-to-goodness contributor is pretty darn neat.

To get more information about Delirium, click here. I've read the first three issues so far and they're good reads; funny, lurid and informative in equal measure.

Fan Expo 2014 Part 4

Hopefully you've enjoyed my coverage of last weekend's Expo over the last few days. I just wanted to wrap things up here with some sights from the show. I didn't take nearly as many photos as I would've liked, as I wasn't on the floor as much this year, but even when I was there often wasn't enough room for me to even raise my arm, let alone get a clear shot of what I was aiming at.

Anyway, here's what I got;

8-foot tall Lego Rocket & Groot!
Bethesda's upcoming survival horror title The Evil Within.
Leon?
Tainted Love cake by Cakes Cove.
I don't know what this is, but I like it.
Featuring new fangled TREEbook story-branching technology.
Now hiring!

The next bunch are from Paul Jones' booth featuring many cool creature creations.

Schwartz picked me up these bad boys for my name day;

And the best costume of the weekend goes to;

There was a cool Annabelle booth at the show that was constantly scaring the shit out of people. I didn't snap a pic, but fortunately this promo got released yesterday.

It Came From The Archives 22!

There's been a lot of Stephen King love on this site recently, so I'll thought I'd cap it off with an archives post. Being a life-long horror fan and pack rat, it shouldn't surprise anyone that I have amassed a sizable stack of all things King.

I previously logged the VHS that graced the shelves of my video store here, here and here, but what I was able to dig out is below.

Moving onto magazines, here are some old ones where King was featured.

Right click to enlarge.

That last one was an interview from Fangoria's 100th issue. Here below is a four-page fold out for It that I got from one of their many poster issues.

I've also often talked about my penchant for newspaper clippings and such. Well, King was included in that obsession.

Right click to enlarge any of the above.

Then, there are the books on tape.

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you. Quitter's Inc was performed by Eric motherfucking Roberts.

Right click to enlarge.

That above tape for The Mist is one of my more prized possessions. It's an audio dramatization of the novella using “Kunstkopf” binaural sound technology. That means it's awesome.

Before getting to the actual novels, I found tons of other tomes too.

That last one I picked up at a library sale. It was in the Children's Literature section. On the back it says, “this biography tells King's younger fans more about his imagination and his wonderfully eerie profession.” How progressive! I also had a few quiz books. I took this admittedly crappy pic before I donated them to the King book and tape swap at The Black Museum last week.

I'm not much for hardcovers. They are big & bulky and take up too much space, though I do have a few on my shelf.

These two promo quad posters were probably acquired during my year-long tenure at a book store. It was around 1995, so the timing matches up.

Here below are all the King paperbacks in my collection. Not complete I know, but still a pleasing sight to see lined up on my bookshelf.

Just picked up that Salem's Lot at the book swap!

Two well-worn, much loved copies of my all-time favourite novel.

Original six-part serialized release of The Green Mile.

So, that's it. I think. Have a great weekend, and I'll see ya Sunday for a new Don't Kill the Messenger!
