Really? Really?? #1 at the box office?! This saddens me. No, I didn’t see it. The trailer ALONE should have been enough to keep people away from this. I can only assume that the majority of the take was teenagers looking for someplace to hang and the demographic that absolutely HAS to see a movie every weekend. Christ, I’ll bet Prom Night 2 is already in the works.If someone can tell me how The Ruins – a legitimately decent product – makes $6M in its opening weekend and an obvious steaming pile pulls in four times that, I’d be really interested to know.
I try to remember that these remakes and sequels serve a purpose and keep the genre afloat commercially so the studios are more apt to take a risk on the good stuff, but it’s hard, oh so hard. I really don’t mean to sound like a snob here, but COME ON!! THIS is what represented horror this weekend…

I am going through your old posts since I am somewhat new to your blog. I don't know that you will read this since it is down the line, but I felt the need to comment on it. I assume you never went to see the "Prom Night" remake. I did go see both films, thinking that "Prom Night" wouldn't be very good.
In the end I did like "The Ruins" better, but "Prom Night" did end up a lot better than what I was expecting it to be. While I do agree with you, that "The Ruins" should have made more money, which film would you have chosen by the trailors alone? A slasher flick or...well, killer vines? I think to most, the slasher flick is safe while the killer vines is just odd.

no, you are right, I didn't see PN, I generally don't see flicks in the theatre if I am pretty sure I won't like. Sometimes I do catch them later on down the line and they are not as abysmal as I was expecting (Running Scared and Turistas are two examples off the top of my head) but as a rule I give flicks like PN a miss.
I see your point, but out of those two, I still say The Ruins is the better trailer. It seemed rather chilling to me... but I remember people in the audiences laughing during the PN trailer, so that can't be good right? PN is the easier sell though.
