In addition to the usual reviews and comments you would find on a horror movie blog, this is also a document of the wonderfully vast horror movie section of the video store I worked at in my youth.

Short of the Week #16: W is for Wish.

Filmmakers I have been following for a long time are Astron 6 alumnus Steve Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie. Here is one of their most infamous collaborations, W is for Wish from ABC's of Death 2.

After cutting their teeth on numerous short films in the 00's, they graduated to features helming cult favourites like Father's Day and Manborg (both 2011). Then, after a wildly successful film festival market push - and subsequent effects crowdfunding campaign - they came out with their Lovecraft & Carpenter adoration piece The Void in 2016.

This is all in addition to the effects work both have done on studio productions that have shot here in Toronto, including It, Suicide Squad & The Shape of Water.

Currently, Gillespie is working on the Star Trek TV series and Kostanski is shooting the newest Leprechaun movie for Syfy (a direct sequel to the 1993 one) in South Africa.

The Void Beckons!

Steve Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie's cinematic nightmare The Void will be unleashed on select cities today. If it is playing in your area, make sure you check it out. It's bad-ass.

I recently received my perks from supporting the IndieGogo campaign, which are now proudly displayed in my collection.

Movie magic!

The Patient (right) says hello to Decker and Bobby.

DKTM 335

Hey all! Hope you avoided getting duped by any April Fools' shenanigrams yesterday. I guarantee all the following stuff is legit...

It Arrives.

The trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's opus It hit the Web this week.

I have to admit that I am pretty impressed by this. The production has just the right amount of modern filmmaking sheen on it, and this new representation of Pennywise actually gave me goosebumps. It hits theatres on August 8th.

Oh Beverly!

The Void hits select theatres and VOD this Friday, but for now here is this clip.

This is a great example of what you can expect from this movie and you'll be glad to hear that it only gets crazier from here. I wasn't joking when I said this was one of the most authentic manifestations of eighties freak show hellscapes you will ever see.

The Empire Strikes Back.

A massive Blu-ray set of announced this week. Fans of Charles Band will already know that before he became the mogul behind nineties macabre mainstay Full Moon Entertainment, he ran Empire Pictures. To commemorate this wild era in home video history, Band will be releasing this huge box set.

Limited to 600 pieces, this box set will include 18 films on 15 discs as well as other goodies. This set will include such canonical titles as Ghoulies, Trancers, Eliminators, From Beyond, Terrorvision, Troll, Dolls, Prison, Ghost Town and Metalstorm (in both standard and 3D versions). The box set will be available on www.FullMoonDirect.com starting April 28th.

Trailer Tuesdays: The Void

Good morning all. Here's the new trailer for The Void, the greatly anticipated film from Steven Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie. It's not a vintage trailer I know, but it sure embodies that eighties horror spirit so I figured, why the hell not?

And they even kept my quote in there at 1:25! Score! The Void finally hits theatres and VOD on April 7th.

Also recently released was the red-band trailer for the second Little Terrors short film collection Galaxy of Horrors. Enjoy!

Galaxy hits VOD today, and DVD on May 2nd.

DKTM 318

Good afternoon everyone. I'm posting to you now from under a pile of blankets, as it appears that the sickness I've been dodging for over a month has now finally caught up with me. Rats.

The Void Awaits.

I was super happy to hear this week that Steve Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie's dark vision The Void has just secured US distribution.

Screen Media has procured the title and intend to release it in early next year. As I said in my review last month, The Void is perfect for not only fans of practical effects and cosmic horror, but those who enjoy straight up tales of the macabre. Be sure to answer the call of The Void when it beckons in 2017.

Squish.

Bloody Disgusting just brought my attention to the gooey exploits of an artist named Jonathan Payne. He is responsible of all manners of weird sculptrures, but the ones that caught my eye were the Fleshettes.

A weird marriage of Cronenberg, Carpenter and Morgan, these things just ooze an unsettling aura.

As if I didn't get enough teeth from Candle Cove :o

Short Cuts.

When I can, I like to showcase short films that have made an impression on me. The first one is Steve Desmond's Monsters. Anchored by a strong performance from young lead Caitlin Carmichael, this short that has torn up the festival circuit has just arrived online.

Second, here is a short that was brought to my attention just recently. Commissioned for Dutch television and directed by Maarten Groen, I think this short, entitled ArrĂȘt Pipi, should have more eyes on it.

DKTM 286

Hello all! I'm spending today watching another friend playthrough Until Dawn, so pardon me for another pre-arranged news post. Here's what I have for you today.

Casting The Void.

The upcoming horror film The Void, directed by Steve Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie, two members of the Canadian collective Astron 6, has been filming in Ontario for several weeks now and just a few days ago came word of the cast assembled for this ambitious project.

Aaron Poole (The Last Will & Testament of Rosalind Leigh) plays Daniel Carter, a lone police officer who finds himself caught in the throes of The Void.

Daniel Fathers (Pontypool) plays Vincent, a mysterious man with his own reasons for seeking the void.

Kenneth Welsh (Twin Peaks) portrays Dr, Powell, the head of the hospital in which the story takes place.

Kathleen Monroe (Survival of the Dead) is Alison, the hospital's head nurse who shares a checkered past with Daniel.

Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) plays Kim, a spunky nurse in training at the hospital.

With production now well underway, I hope we will all get to see the horrific secrets within The Void sometime next year.

Negan Speaks.

A while ago, it was revealed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be filling the very large shoes of infamous Walking Dead villain Negan. This week, Morgan sat down with EW to talk about what we have to look forward to. Here's a sample from the interview;

On getting the part;

“So a couple of years ago people started saying, “Hey, man, you should be Negan in The Walking Dead.” So I started reading the comic books just because I’m a fan and I love what Kirkman is doing and so I was very aware of Negan and had read quite a bit of the comic books. So my agent and manager were on the phone and said, “The Walking Dead have offered you this thing,” but they didn’t have any information. It was all a big secret. And they sort of got halfway through the sentence saying “We don’t know the character’s name, he’s the new big bad…” and I knew immediately who they were talking about. They just got halfway through and I knew immediately who it was. It was no question. I was like, “Absolutely. We’re going to f—ing do it!” And that was it. And literally a week later I was in Atlanta talking with the cast and hanging out.”

On how close the character will be the comic;

“The character itself is going to be as close as humanly possible. The foul language is a speed bump, I’m not going to say it’s an issue because they’re working on it. We’re going to push AMC — the plan is to push them as far as they can because it’s who Negan is. He uses some colorful language. And reading the comic, it’s important. It’s our intention that this character is going to leap off the pages of the comic book. Some of the characters there’s much more leeway, but Negan is a guy that you want to keep as true as possible, and that would be how I want to play him as well.”

On whether he has seen Lucille (Negan's trusty bat);

“Yes I have. She is gorgeous. A beautiful girl.”

For the rest of the interview, click here.

Handmade Horrors.

I found an awesome site called Clay Disarray the other day. UK artist Lizzie Campbell uses clay to reenact some of horror's most celebrated posters. Check out some of these.

There are many other great ones at her site, which you can check out here.

DKTM 255

Hey all. It's been a solid weekend filled with the new season of House of Cards and watching Rousey defend her title in fourteen seconds flat, but now it's time for some genre news.

Picture The Void.

The IndieGogo campaign for The Void has been going excellently, with over ten-thousand dollars raised in less than a week. On Thursday, the filmmakers (Steve Kostanski & Jeremy Gillespie) announced perhaps their best contribution perks yet.

These three posters were commission from some of the best in the business (Graham Humprheys, Justin Erickson and Gary Pullin respectively). One-hundred twenty dollars will get you one of these three (each limited to 100) prints, and three hundred will get you the trio.

To visit the campaign page, click here.

Black Museum V.

The fifth semester of the Toronto lecture series, The Black Museum kicked off last Thursday with a screening of Andrea Bianchi's batshit crazy film Burial Ground on 35mm.

Poster art by Trevor Henderson

Before the screening, they announced the first lectures of their fifth stanza. Check it out!

For more info on The Black Museum, go here.

Sans Head.

Headless, the companion piece to Found, one of my favourite films of 2013, has a new trailer.

I'm liking what I'm seeing here. I think the addition of the kid mirrors the dynamic of Found in an interesting way. If you are lucky enough to be in Indiana, you can catch an encore screening (the premiere was last night) today at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre in Bloomington at 7pm. Say hi to Scott for me.
